Elk River, MN Friends of GACC donated $4800.00 to music therapy for the residents at the care center. The Recreation Department asked for financial assistance for music therapy from the Friends of GACC knowing that different forms of music and music therapy activities are beneficial to elderly patients.

Everyone can benefit from music activities in some capacity. Some can be effective music therapy. It has been found to be helpful to the elderly and seniors in geriatric care, palliative care and with Alzheimer's and other dementia.
Although music therapy is a specialized area for trained therapists, it doesn't take special training or musical background to apply music and musical elements for general benefit to seniors and the elderly patients in the many care facilities. Music has nonverbal qualities and it can promote; creativity, awareness, expression and communication. Music therapy for depression can alleviate a sense of loneliness and isolation, especially in group sing-alongs or musical participation activities. Music therapy has made an impact on the residents, such as shown by participation in sing-alongs by a resident that usually prefers non group activities. This is only one example of the power of music therapy

Auxiliary Meeting Dates!
The dates have been changed for the Auxiliary meetings as per an auxiliary vote, they will be held every other month starting in July and on the second Monday of the month.
The Auxiliary purchased this Reverie Harp as a therapeutic tool for the Recreation staff to use while visiting with residents. It has made an impact on the residents lives. Residents seem to lose their apprehension about playing the music becomes whatever they want it to be!
According to the designers and makers of the Reverie Harp: “The Reverie Harp is designed as a therapy tool for non-musicians . It is designed specifically so that a person does not need to engage the mind to enjoy pleasant sounds. So the word “play” does not mean “perform” on this harp. You “play with” this harp. You can close your eyes and play with it – we call it “noodling around” on the strings so that any resident can enjoy playing with it. The harp is designed for relaxation, for simple fun, soothing harmonies, tactile stimulation, resonant vibrations and satisfaction of instant pleasure and success. It is also useful as a tool to stimulate conversation and interaction and staff and residents can make musical harmonies together”. Pictured Clarence Schumacher and Susan LaBelle, Recreation Staff.
